Last fall, the United States Department of Agriculture reported that nearly 700,000 children went hungry in the U.S. at some point during 2007. Prompted by that statistic and by his own extensive philanthropic experiences, chef and restaurateur Mario Batali stepped out of his world-famous kitchens and established a new culinary-minded venture, the Mario Batali Foundation.
